About us

Owned and run exclusively by women for women Escape Safaris for Women is run by local surfers Crystal Simpson and Lizzie Nunn. Both ladies have been working as surf instructors at Yallingup Surf School and have extended the locally operated company into women’s only ‘Surfaris’ based on the success of such programs in the United States and Mexico where the two have been gaining valuable experience in the tour guide industry.

Lizzie and Crystal have worked in the capacity of Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director and Head Surf Instructor for the last two Northern hemisphere summers in San Diego, California working for Surf Diva; the largest and original all girls surf school. Lizzie has been Head Instructor (for 2 seasons) at Las Olas, women’s surfing safaris in Mexico which she defines as ‘the epitome of women’s surf vacations’. Both girls have been greatly inspired by the number of women keen to learn to surf and experience cultural differences whilst travelling abroad. Bearing that in mind, Crystal and Lizzie have designed a holiday that combines adventure, relaxation, ecotourism and cultural exchange in their home town.

Crystal Simpson

Crystal is a true-blue Yallingup local who has been surfing for 9 years. Her father George, taught her to surf in the powerful waves at Yallingup beach and she opts to ride long boards the traditional (and classy!) way.

After finishing school, Crystal bought and ran her own surf shop called ‘Surfside Beach Shack’ for three years before heading to Byron Bay to work for ‘Go ride a wave’ and surf the long point breaks of northern New South Wales.

She is an accomplished long board competitor and finished second in the West Australian State titles in 2006, then second again in the Yallingup Malibu Classic in 2004/5. Most recently Crystal appeared (hanging 10) in Australian Longboarder and Pacific Longboarder magazine after a photo shoot  in the Mentawi Islands where she travelled with professional surfers Belinda Baggs, Mary Osborne and Schuyler Mcferran. She also features in ‘Girlosophy’, a series of books about real girls, their hobbies, passions and philosophies on life.

Crystal has travelled and surfed throughout Australia, Indonesia, California, Mexico and Hawaii, favouring right hand point breaks.

Crystal is adored by all those she coaches! They appreciate her patient and sensitive manner, enthusiasm and exuberant nature. Claire Osborne (a past student at Surf Diva, California) says “Crystal was endlessly smiling and always had words of encouragement whenever I felt too exhausted to heave my body onto the surfboard again”.

In her downtime, Crystal loves to surf, cook, go jogging and is the female host of ‘West Oz Weekends’, a lifestyle TV series filmed in the local area. She also makes a wicked apple mint majito!

Lizzie Nunn

Lizzie can’t seem to shake off teaching women to surf. Despite a Degree in Human Movement at the University of Western Australia and a Diploma in Education it is teaching women how to surf that has become a passion and lifestyle.

Her father Les, first pushed her into waves on a windsurfing board when she was only 10, but her first lesson was at age 14 with Surfing Western Australia under the eyes of surfing great Jodie Cooper.

It wasn’t too long before she was surfing in contests and eventually fell into coaching.
With her excellent organisation skills and desire to promote women’s surfing, Lizzie became Surfing Western Australia’s Women’s Representative at age 19 and soon after took on the National role as National Women’s Director for Surfing Australia. It was a position that saw her gain an Honour Role listing at the 1996 ‘Surfing Hall of Fame Awards’, in Torquay and a Prime minister’s award at the 1996 ‘Women and Sport Awards’ in Sydney. She also gained recognition in 2000 from the Australian Government and was awarded an Australian Sports Medal for her outstanding contribution to women’s surfing. In 2006 she won ‘Instructor of the Year’ at Surf Diva surf school, in California. Her coaching nickname in Mexico is “Tough love”, based on her direct (almost clinical!) coaching manner. She has been coaching for 13 years and has a pet peeve about people using their ‘knees’ to stand up…so be warned.

Lizzie has surfed throughout Australia and in Indonesia, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hawaii, California and Mexico. She loves over head-high long left hand waves breaking over tropical reef. And on her days off, Lizzie loves to practice yoga, skin dive, play guitar, write, potter in the garden and read good novels. She also cooks abalone and squid like you wouldn’t believe!
