All about Yallingup
Yallingup is a small tourist town three hours drive south of Perth, in Western
Australia. It is a popular holiday destination for surfing, fishing and
relaxing.
Yallingup is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Place of Love’ and the
township became a loved destination because of its stunning limestone
caves first discovered by European settlers in 1899. Yallingup’s most
famous cave, Ngilgi Cave, is named after the Ocean Spirit who dwells
there after battling and defeating the notorious Wolgine who was causing
drought and famine and starving the local Wadandi people.
Apart from its Aboriginal cultural significance,
Yallingup has many
attractions: wineries, breweries, galleries, arts and craft abound.
There are bountiful natural offerings in the Leeuwin Naturaliste National
Park, such as surfing, windsurfing, fishing, whale watching and dolphin
spotting, diving for crayfish and abalone, scuba diving on ship wrecks,
wildflowers, rock climbing and abseiling on granite cliff faces,
bushwalking, horse riding, canoeing, golfing and so much more.
